Upstairs, Charley entered Nikki’s bedroom, which looked like a chaotic teenager’s. Several towels were strewn amongst odd, unpaired shoes littering the bedroom carpet. Lingerie, dresses, and robes sprinkled the chairs. In the midst of the disorder Nikki calmly completed her preparations, like a general in the heat of battle.

Charley caught her breath. Nikki looked stunning in a long sheath of red satin, glittering with thousands of sequins. The neckline was high, cut straight across her shoulders, and the bodice was tightfitting, while the back plunged away into a deep V accentuating Nikki’s beautiful sun-bed tan. The design was simple but spectacular. Nikki was out to kill.

“Mom, why are you going to the Inauguration ball with St John Rhodes-Ross of all people?”

Nikki didn’t even pause in putting on her deep-blue mascara.

“Why not? He’s the most stunning-looking man on both sides of the Atlantic. I will be the envy of every female Reagan supporter tonight.” Nikki took two paces back to check herself over in the mirror. “And probably quite a few male supporters.” She swizzled around. “What do you think?”

Nikki’s hair gleamed like burnished metal framing a face that glowed with carefully applied makeup. Dark red lipstick to match her dress outlined her newly collagen-injected lips. Over one shoulder she draped a white mink fur coat.

Charley’s heart burned with pity for Nikki’s transparent vulnerability.

“I think you and St John will knock ’em dead. Go show those Republicans what a real Democrat looks like. And when they see you with St John, every woman there will want to cut your heart out. After they find out who designed your dress.”

Charley’s could see her unexpected approval flustered her mother but at the same time gave her confidence a massive boost. Nikki laughed and managed to sniff back a tear.

“Giancarlo of course. I’m killing two birds with one stone—promoting American Lady and showing Lorenzo that I am one.”
